COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY

As members of Eagle Cove School, we share a commitment to understand and honor our differences, treat each other with respect, and uphold our school's celebration of diversity.

Outreach Activities

We encourage an awareness of our greater society through outreach programs. Some of this year's activities include sandwich making for the homeless, decorating an Angel tree by donating presents for needy children at Christmastime, and filling Easter baskets to be donated to needy families during the Easter season.

The Parents' Association is very active in all these activities.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes provide your child with activities that meet his or her academic and social needs. Pre-reading and pre-math skills are taught to provide a meaningful introduction to the elementary years. Our goal is to make this experience a positive one that fosters a joy for learning.

Our 1st through 5th grade program is known for its student portfolios. Students are taught to do their very best work in dictation (emphasizing listening skills and handwriting development), composition, mathematics, social studies, and selected Specials assignments. These are reviewed monthly by parents in addition to the weekly Friday folders. Each month's work is then collected by the homeroom teacher and bound together to create a yearly portfolio of each student's very best work. The homeroom teacher has responsibility for language arts, mathematics, and social studies. Language Arts begins with a strong phonics approach along with exposure to many types of literature. Extensive writing activities enhance the reading program. Mathematics focuses on computation skills, mathematical operations, and problem solving. It is taught with the use of manipulatives and related to everyday math through drill, practice, and imaginative projects. Social studies classes develop the concept of family and community. Within the context of American traditions, an appreciation and understanding of other cultures is explored.

All children, Pre-K through 5th Grade, have their education broadened by specialists who teach Science, Art, Music, Physical Education, Spanish, Computer, and Library Skills. Our primary foreign language focus is Spanish, and all students, Pre-K through 5th, receive instruction in this language.

One of Eagle Cove School’s key goals is to promote and support programs and initiatives in Environmental Studies, which we regard as a fundamental component of young people’s learning in the world today and tomorrow.
At all grade levels, our students are involved in environmental learning and other projects that increase their awareness of environmental issues, their partnering skills, and their confidence in people’s ability to effect positive change in the world. Parents and teachers assist them with larger projects, and we use the resources of several different environmental organizations.
Our efforts and initiatives culminated in May 2006 with Eagle Cove School being named an official Maryland Green School! We received our recertification again Spring 2010.
