Tips for Searching

Be an Effective Searcher

  • Re-word your questions. Figure out exactly what you are trying to find out
  • Choose specific search words
  • Use multiple search engines (like Google) & directories (like Yahoo)
  • Don't settle for just the top "hits". Scroll down and look at least the top 10 hits
  • Look at the website addresses. Is a site's extension ".com"? ".edu"? " .org"? Which type of site is going to be the most informative, official, authoritative, non-biased, ...
  • Check the information you get on different sites. In other words, verify your information
  • And finally, record the site name that you used to find the information (and no, Yahoo and Google are not sources - they are searching aids to get you to the sources)
